About Us

The WWSC is a coalition of workers, staff and students. It was formed in April 2011. Currently, the committee comprises of workers from Sonke, Supercare, Caravone, ABC and Kevin’s Plumbing. Staff are made up both academic and administrative staff.

Why was the WWSC formed?
Concerned about the continuing and intensifying injustices against outsourced workers at the University, staff and students joined workers to form the WWSC. The WWSC aims to raise awareness about the grievances of outsourced workers, and to struggle against their deteriorating conditions.

How does the WWSC function?
The activities of the WWSC are coordinated by a Steering Committee. Three workers from each of the above mentioned companies were democratically elected to be on the committee. Two academic staff, and one administrative staff member was elected to the Steering Committee as well three students, one of whom is an SRC member.
The Steering Committee has meetings at least once a week, and we have larger meetings of the WWSC as often as possible.

Campaigns
The first campaign of the WWSC was that of racism. Last year an investigation was held into racism against Mr. Ian Armitage. The WWSC organised a rally where we handed over a memorandum to the Wits management calling for the release of thr report with the findings of the investigation. We also organised three demonstrations and held two meetings with the Vice Chancellor. Mr. Armitage has admitted he was guilty, and has since resigned from the university.
We are currently working on our next campaign, including finding ways to support cleaning sector workers who may go on strike.

How do you get involved?
To join the WWSC you simply have to attend our meetings. There are no fees or penalties.
